Howard W. Stewart, Sr., also known as Stew, Sarge and Unkie, age 71, of Newark, DE, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at Christiana Hospital, Newark, surrounded by his loving family. He died from Pneumonia. 

Mr. Stewart was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Howard W. and Alice (Kilmon) Stewart and had been a Senior Sergeant for the New Castle County Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1989. Mr. Stewart served his country in the US Navy and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley M. (Jackson) Stewart; son, Howard W. Stewart, Jr. of Wilmington, DE; siblings, Jean M. Palmatary of Arkansas; Charles L. Stewart and Barbara M. Concord both of Newark, DE, James D. Stewart of Port Penn, DE, Carol L. Riggs of Bear, DE and Robert E. Stewart of Newark, DE. Besides his parents; Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his son, Glen Stewart; brothers, Alvin C. Beatson, William S. Stewart, Edward M. Stewart; and a sister, Alice A. Pleasanton.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm, on Thursday, February 28, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Friends may call from 6-8 pm, on Wednesday, February 27, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, Minquadale, New Castle.
